Short answer: Match your panels to the solar port, not the other way around. The base F3800 has two XT-60 ports, each rated 11–60V, 27A max and 1,200W, so panels go in parallel and no single panel can exceed 60V. The F3800 Plus ports take 11–165V at 17A and 1,600W each, so panels go in series. Always check open-circuit voltage (Voc) and current against the port before wiring (Anker specs).
Solar is what turns an Anker SOLIX F3800 from a big battery into something you can keep refilling during a long outage. It is also where most setup mistakes happen. The two F3800 models look the same on the outside, but their solar inputs work very differently, and a panel string that suits one can be wrong for the other. Here is how to match panels to each model, with worked examples using the 550W panel we sell in Las Vegas.
Why the F3800 and F3800 Plus need different wiring
Every solar input has a voltage window and a current limit. Voltage adds up when panels are wired in series (positive to negative). Current adds up when panels are wired in parallel (positives together, negatives together).
- Base F3800: a low-voltage, high-current input. With a 60V ceiling per port, most full-size panels can only go one per string, so you add panels in parallel. Anker's own setup guide tells you to wire panels in parallel for this model.
- F3800 Plus: a high-voltage, lower-current input (11–165V, 17A per port). Here you add panels in series to raise voltage while keeping the current under 17A.
Anker's F3800 guide also says each port should get an identical setup in model, capacity, and voltage. Do not mix panel types on the same port.
How to set up solar on an F3800 in 6 steps
- Confirm your model. The base F3800 has a NEMA 14-50 outlet; the F3800 Plus has a TT-30R RV outlet instead. Our F3800 vs F3800 Plus comparison lists the solar specs for both.
- Find your panel's label numbers. You need Voc (open-circuit voltage), Vmp, Isc (short-circuit current), and Imp (current at max power). Our 550W panel spec sheet lists them: Voc 50.2V, Vmp 42.4V, Isc 13.78A, Imp 12.97A.
- Check voltage first. Add up Voc for every panel in series. The total must stay under the port's maximum: 60V on the base F3800, 165V on the Plus. Voc rises in cold weather, so leave headroom.
- Then check current. Add up current for every string in parallel. Anker sizes base F3800 strings by current at max power: its guide recommends two 405W rigid panels (12.99A each) per port, because three would exceed 27A.
- Wire and connect. The base F3800 includes two MC4 3-port connectors for parallel wiring, then solar charging cables that plug into the XT-60 ports. Use the cables and connectors your model calls for, and keep each port's setup identical.
- Watch the input in the Anker app on a clear day and compare it with what you expected. Real-world output is usually below the panel's rating because of heat, angle, dust, and shade.
F3800 solar input limits and 550W panel matching
| Item | F3800 | F3800 Plus | Type | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solar ports | 2 × XT-60 | 2 | Spec | Anker setup guide; Sun Solvers comparison page |
| Voltage per port | 11–60V (27A at 28–60V; 10A at 11–28V) | 11–165V | Spec | Sun Solvers F3800 vs F3800 Plus page (Anker specs) |
| Max current per port | 27A | 17A | Spec | Anker setup guide; Sun Solvers comparison page |
| Max power per port / total | 1,200W / 2,400W | 1,600W / 3,200W | Spec | Sun Solvers comparison page; Anker F3800 Plus product page |
| How to add panels | Parallel, identical per port | Series | Guidance | Anker F3800 setup guide; voltage/current limits above |
| 550W panel (Voc 50.2V, Imp 12.97A, Isc 13.78A) | 1 panel per string | Up to 3 per series string | Spec | Sun Solvers 550W panel specs |
| 2 × 550W in series | 100.4V Voc: over 60V, do not use | 100.4V: within 165V | Calculation | 2 × 50.2V |
| 3 × 550W in series | Not allowed | 150.6V Voc, 14.4V under the 165V limit; 1,650W rated, so the port caps it at 1,600W | Calculation | 3 × 50.2V; 3 × 550W vs 1,600W |
| 2 × 550W in parallel | 25.94A Imp (under 27A), 1,100W per port | 25.94A: over 17A, do not use | Calculation | 2 × 12.97A, Anker's Imp-based sizing |
| Best-case full recharge from solar | 3,840Wh ÷ 2,400W ≈ 1.6 h | 3,840Wh ÷ 3,200W ≈ 1.2 h | Calculation | Capacity and max input above; ignores losses and real-world output |
So with our 550W panels, a base F3800 takes up to four (two in parallel on each port, about 2,200W rated), and an F3800 Plus takes up to six (three in series on each port, capped at 3,200W total). Before you pair the 750W panel, ask us for its full datasheet. Its spec page does not list Voc or Isc, and those decide the wiring.
Panel matching checklist
- Your F3800 model (base or Plus), confirmed from the outlet panel.
- Panel label values: Voc, Vmp, Isc, Imp, and wattage.
- Series Voc total under 60V (F3800) or 165V (F3800 Plus), with room to spare for cold mornings. Your installer can check the temperature-corrected Voc using the panel datasheet.
- Parallel current total under 27A (F3800) or 17A (F3800 Plus) per port.
- Identical panels and wiring on each port.
- The right connectors: MC4 3-port connectors and XT-60 solar charging cables for the base F3800.
- A shaded, ventilated spot for the F3800 itself. Panels belong in the sun; the power station does not.
- Rooftop or ground mounting for permanent panels is a job for a licensed professional. For permanent connections to your home's wiring, see how to connect an F3800 to your home.

Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum solar input of the Anker SOLIX F3800?
The base F3800 accepts up to 2,400W of solar: 1,200W on each of its two XT-60 ports, at 11–60V and up to 27A per port. The F3800 Plus accepts up to 3,200W: 1,600W on each of two 11–165V ports.
Can I connect solar panels in series to an F3800?
On the base F3800, only if the combined open-circuit voltage stays under 60V, which rules out series for most full-size panels. Anker recommends parallel wiring for this model. The F3800 Plus is built for series strings up to 165V.
How many 550W panels can I use with an F3800 Plus?
Up to three in series per port, six in total. Three panels add up to 150.6V open-circuit voltage, within the 165V limit, and about 1,650W rated, which the port caps at 1,600W.
Can I use 400W portable panels with the F3800?
Yes. Anker's guide shows up to three of its 400W panels (8.33A each) in parallel on each base F3800 port, six in total, for the full 2,400W.
Can I mix different solar panels on the F3800?
Anker says the setup on each port should be identical in model, capacity, and voltage. Mixing panels on one port can cut output and cause usage issues.
